NDA vs CDS: Which Defence Exam Should You Choose After Class 12?

Many defence aspirants get confused between NDA and CDS while planning their career. Both lead to a commission in the Indian Armed Forces, but the entry point, age, and training path are very different.

Entry Stage

NDA is open right after Class 12, making it the earliest entry point into the armed forces. CDS, on the other hand, is a graduate-level exam, so you can appear for it only after completing (or while completing) your bachelor's degree. If your goal is to join the forces as young as possible, NDA is the natural choice.

Training Duration and Structure

NDA cadets undergo three years of joint training at Khadakwasla followed by one year at their respective service academy — a total of four years before commissioning. CDS candidates who clear IMA or OTA typically complete a shorter, more focused training cycle of about one to one-and-a-half years, since they join with a degree already in hand.

Academic Load

NDA's written exam tests Class 11-12 level Mathematics and General Ability, while CDS focuses more on English, General Knowledge and graduate-level current affairs, with comparatively simpler Mathematics (except for technical entries). This makes CDS relatively more GK-intensive and NDA more Mathematics-intensive.

Which One Should You Pick?

If you are still in Class 12 and are clear about a defence career, NDA lets you start early and gives you the most comprehensive military grooming. If you are already pursuing graduation or want to keep a backup career option open, CDS is a strong alternative that still leads to a commissioned officer's rank. Many serious aspirants prepare for both exams simultaneously to maximise their chances.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the eligibility for CDS 2026?

Candidates must be graduates (or in final year) and unmarried for IMA, INA and AFA. Age limits vary by academy, broadly between 19 and 25 years.

How many papers are there in CDS exam?

For IMA, INA and AFA: three papers — English, General Knowledge and Elementary Mathematics. For OTA: only English and General Knowledge.

Which is better — NDA or CDS?

NDA is for Class 12 students and provides a 3-year joint training experience starting from an earlier age. CDS is for graduates and offers a shorter training period. Both are prestigious routes into the armed forces.
