Difference Between NDA, CDS, AFCAT and Navy Agniveer: Which Path Is Right for You?

Aspirants often ask which defence entry is best suited to their profile. Since each pathway differs in eligibility, training and rank, understanding the distinctions helps you plan the right route.

NDA

Open after Class 12, NDA leads to a permanent commission as an officer after four years of training (three years joint training plus one year at the respective academy). It is the earliest and most comprehensive officer-entry route.

CDS

Open to graduates, CDS leads to officer commissioning through IMA, INA, AFA or OTA in a shorter training cycle than NDA, since candidates already hold a degree at entry.

AFCAT

AFCAT is the Indian Air Force's own entrance exam for graduates seeking a Permanent or Short Service Commission specifically in the Air Force, across Flying, Technical and Non-Technical Ground Duty branches.

Navy/Air Force Agniveer (SSR/X-Y Group)

These entries recruit for the Agniveer scheme at the sailor/airman (non-officer) level, open to Class 10 or 12 pass candidates, with a defined service tenure and a pathway for a percentage of Agniveers to continue as regular cadre thereafter.

Choosing the Right Path

If you want to become a commissioned officer starting right after school, NDA is ideal. If you are a graduate or will be one soon, CDS or AFCAT (for the Air Force specifically) are strong options. If you want to join the forces sooner without a degree requirement, and are open to the Agniveer tenure structure, Navy SSR or Air Force X/Y Group are worth considering.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the eligibility for CDS 2026?

Candidates must be graduates (or in final year) and unmarried for IMA, INA and AFA. Age limits vary by academy, broadly between 19 and 25 years.

How many papers are there in CDS exam?

For IMA, INA and AFA: three papers — English, General Knowledge and Elementary Mathematics. For OTA: only English and General Knowledge.

Which is better — NDA or CDS?

NDA is for Class 12 students and provides a 3-year joint training experience starting from an earlier age. CDS is for graduates and offers a shorter training period. Both are prestigious routes into the armed forces.
